Packing lunch boxes five days a week is a grind. Some weeks you've got time for homemade muffins. Most weeks you don't, and that's completely fine. So we did the aisle-walking for you and pulled together our favourite cleaner grabs at Coles - the ones with shorter ingredient lists and fewer things you can't pronounce.
An honest note: recipes change, stock varies store to store, and "healthy" on the front doesn't always match the back. We've kept our picks to genuinely good options, but the label is always the source of truth. Here's the two-second version of what we look for.
Worth a spot in the box
- Short ingredient lists you can actually read
- Real food first - fruit, oats, dairy or seeds up top
- No added sugar, or fruit doing the sweetening
- Protein or fibre to keep them full until the bell
Maybe give it a miss
- Sugar (or its many aliases) near the top of the list
- Artificial colours - often the 100-series numbers
- A long tail of additives you'd never cook with
- "Fruit" snacks that are mostly juice concentrate
The no-fuss lunch box formula
Pick one or two from each and you've got a balanced box in under a minute.
| Fresh | Fruit, veg sticks |
| Filling | Cheese, yoghurt, eggs, sandwich or a wrap |
| Crunchy | Popcorn, rice cakes, crackers |
| Treat | A bar, bites or a small treat |
Nut-free reminder: Most schools are nut-free or nut-aware zones, so double-check bars, spreads and trail mixes before they go into the lunch box.

- Walk the health food aisle. Most of the crackers, seaweed and fruit crisps above live there rather than with the chips.
