Top 10 After-School Snacks

Ten combos built to hold little legends from the 3pm pick-up right through until dinner.

After-school snack combos packed in a Bento Buds stainless steel lunch box

School's out, the bag hits the floor, and the first words out of their mouth are "I'm hungry."

Most kids eat lunch around 12pm, so by 3pm their bellies are running on empty. The problem isn't the hunger, it's what happens next. A packet of sultanas or a plain rice cake gets eaten in ninety seconds and they're back in the pantry by 3.15pm, then too full of snacks to eat dinner at 6pm.

The fix is simple. One substantial snack to tide them over until dinnertime.

The formula

Every snack below follows the same shape:

  • 1A protein or dairy anchorCheese, yoghurt, eggs, tuna, hommus, nut butter. This is the bit that actually holds them.
  • 2Something fresh or crunchyFruit or veg for fibre, or crackers, rice cakes and a small slice of bread.

Pair two together and it will comfortably carry your little legend from 3pm to a 5.30 or 6pm dinner. Pack it in a lunch box before pick-up and it's ready the second they get in the car.

The 10 combos

1

Cheese, crackers and a Kooee stick

Cheddar cubes, a handful of wholegrain crackers, and a grass-fed Kooee stick.

Why it works: Fat, protein and slow carbs in one box. Perfect for staying power.

Easier: Cube a whole block of cheese on Sunday and keep it in a container.

2

Hommus with cucumber and carrot

A scoop of hommus with cucumber and carrot sticks. Add some crackers if they're extra hungry.

Why it works: Chickpeas bring protein and fibre together, so there's no sugar spike and no 4.30pm crash.

Easier: Cut the sticks the night before and store them in water. They stay crisp for days.

3

Banana choc chip muffin and strawberries

One homemade banana choc chip muffin with a few halved strawberries.

Why it works: Banana and nut butter make this a slower burn than anything from a packet, and the strawberries keep it fresh. Our banana choc chip muffin recipe is here.

Easier: Bake a batch on the weekend and freeze them. One out in the morning is thawed by pick-up.

4

Greek yoghurt and berries

Plain Greek yoghurt with a handful of berries on top.

Why it works: Roughly double the protein of a flavoured yoghurt, and none of the added sugar.

Easier: If plain is a hard sell, stir through a teaspoon of honey.

5

Apple slices with nut butter

Sliced apple with a proper spoon of peanut butter to dip.

Why it works: Apple alone is a twenty-minute snack. Apple with nut butter is a two-hour one.

Easier: Sunflower seed butter or tahini if you're keeping it nut-free.

6

Tinned tuna or salmon on rice cakes

Mash a small tin with a little mayo or avocado and spread it over rice cakes.

Why it works: Serious protein for almost no effort, plus omega-3s.

Easier: Buy single-serve tins so there's no half-tin left over.

7

Cottage cheese or ricotta with banana

Cottage cheese or ricotta with sliced banana, a drizzle of honey, and wholegrain crackers.

Why it works: Slow-digesting protein sits with them for hours. The honey makes it an easy sell.

Easier: Ricotta is usually the gentler starting point if cottage cheese texture is a problem.

8

Carrot sticks and a cheese cubes

Carrot sticks with a couple of cubes of cheddar. The two-ingredient afternoon.

Why it works: Fat and protein from the cheese, fibre and crunch from the carrot.

Easier: Keep pre-cut carrots and cubed cheese in one container so it's a straight scoop into the box.

9

Boiled eggs with grapes

Two boiled eggs, peeled and halved, with a small handful of grapes.

Why it works: Eggs are one of the most filling foods going, and the grapes stop it feeling dry.

Easier: Boil six at the start of the week and leave them in their shells in the fridge. Cut grapes lengthways for anyone under four.

10

Half a cheese sandwich and a banana

Half a cheese sandwich on wholegrain bread, banana on the side.

Why it works: The most familiar option on the list, and it works because it's already a mini meal.

Easier: Make it when you make lunch in the morning. One sandwich covers both boxes.

A few things that make afternoons easier

Pack it before pick-up. A snack that's already portioned gets eaten in the car or on the walk home, which takes the edge off before the pantry raid starts.

Portion it properly. The goal is to hold them, not fill them. A snack big enough to replace dinner defeats the purpose.

Drink water first. Half the time the 3pm meltdown is thirst wearing a hunger costume. Water bottle first, snack second.

Now to give those snacks a good home

You've packed them full of all the good stuff. Now keep the nasties out with a plastic-free snack box.

These snacks are made for the Bento Buds snack box collection. The two compartments keep everything separate and looking good, so you can pack it in the morning and it's still fresh when they jump in the car or walk through the door.

Because it's built right, you don't have to think twice:

  • Plastic-free, so no leaching and no lingering smells
  • Food-grade stainless steel, built to last
  • Removable silicone seal for easy cleaning
  • Personalised with their name, so it comes home again
